Everything about the various materials we use and products we make.

Mailer boxes

How does height affect mailer box prices?

Height of a mailer box greatly impacts the amount of materials required in production. The larger the height, the more material is required, and the more expensive it will be. Here's an illustration on why this is the case.

What is flute in packaging?

Flute, or corrugation, is used to strengthen or reinforce the cardboard that's used in your packaging. They typically look like wavy lines which when glued to a paperboard, forms the corrugated board. Fluting in packaging gives your packaging the rigidity and helps withstand any crushing.

What is the minimum order quantity for mailer boxes?

100 units. The MOQ is based on every unique box (e.g. size, design).

What materials do you use for corrugated mailer boxes?

The standard materials for mailer boxes depend on whether you want a white or kraft mailer. White mailers use CCNB paper (clay cloated news back), which is made up of recycled materials, and kraft mailers use kraft paper. More details on materials here.

What standard finishes do you provide for mailer boxes?

Our standard finishes include a matte or glossy aqueous finish. Depending on your design, we may use lamination instead to minimize the appearance of cracks in the paper.

Can I order a printed sample of my mailer box?

Yes! We can provide a Simplified Sample which is printed but doesn't include finishes (e.g. matte/glossy) nor add-ons such as foil stamping or embossing. We'll include a dieline for you to add your artwork to once you place an order for a sample.

Can you provide a mailer box dieline for me?

You can access all standard mailer box dielines here. For other types and custom sized mailer boxes, dielines are provided upon purchase of a sample or a production order.

Does my mailer box need extra packaging when being shipped?

Mailer boxes are sturdy enough to be sent out as is and are often used as external shipping cartons alone. If your mailer boxes have artwork on the outside of the box, you can consider adding an external envelope or carton, to protect your designs. To use mailers as both branded packaging and shipping boxes, we'd suggest including print on the inside of the box. This way, your customers are greeted with your beautiful brand and artwork while unboxing. The outside of the box can be blank to save on costs, leaving enough room to place shipping labels.

We can provide paper, cardboard, or foam based inserts. This depends on what you're looking for and the type of product(s) you will need an insert for.

Can you provide me with a custom box insert dieline?

Dielines are provided as a deliverable of our structural design service.

What if I already have my own structural design for inserts?

Great! Send your dieline file over of the insert and we'll provide a quote for you based on this dieline. Note that if you'd like us to produce the insert according to your dieline, we cannot guarantee your products will fit in the insert and associated box unless we run structural tests with your products. If you'd like us to test your products with your insert design, you can purchase a structural sample of the insert.

What is the average price of a custom box insert?

Assuming the same materials for the insert are the same as the box's material, the price of an insert is around 45-50% of the box. Please note that this is just an estimation and the price is subject to change. The final price of inserts will be determined once we've created a structural design, which is where we'll know the optimal type and amount of materials to use.

Should I use corrugated or non-corrugated materials for my box divider?

This would depend on the function of the dividers and your products. We suggest corrugated dividers if your products are heavy, fragile, and will be shipped. Non-corrugated dividers are best for lightweight and non-fragile items. Let us know your use case and we can recommend the ideal material for you!

What information do I need to provide to get a quote for custom box dividers?

Is your packaging eco-friendly?

Yes! All paper based materials are made with at least 50% post-consumer content, and we use soy-based ink for all print. Learn more about our sustainability practices here.

Note: if your packaging requires lamination, it will be less eco-friendly since lamination is made with a layer of thin plastic. It will however still be recyclable, with some limitations.

What is post-consumer content?

Post-consumer content or post-consumer recycled content is all the waste and materials left over once it's been used by the end consumer. These materials are taken from landfills and can be used in the production of other packaging.

What are void fillers?

A void filler is the additional material that that's used to fill the empty space inside your packaging. Void fillers help keep your product in place, prevent it from being shifted around during transit, and also protects your products from breaking.

Why is printing on kraft paper more expensive?

Due to the material nature of kraft paper, we have to use twice the amount of ink for each color and run the printing process twice to ensure the ink that's being printed is absorbed.

Bioplastic packaging is made of plastics that are sourced from plants or other biological material and biodegradable plastic is made of petroleum-based materials.

What are the differences between coated and uncoated paper?

Coated paper is paper that is coated with an agent, typically clay and in some cases pigments, which helps the paper look brighter and smoother. Uncoated paper, on the other hand, does not contain any agent or pigments, meaning that there's nothing to fill in the gaps and pores in the paper fibers.

What's the difference between utility packaging and branded packaging?

Utility packaging serves only a single purpose and that is to ship your products. A standard brown shipping carton or an envelope would be considered utility packaging. While you can add your logo to utility packaging, the main purpose is to facilitate shipping.

Branded packaging places emphasis on the quality, look, and feel of the packaging. It is the canvas for your brand to showcase your values, mission and align your brand with your products. It can also hold information about the products, ingredients, and other information. This type of packaging is also an important marketing tool and adds value to your unboxing experience.

What's the difference between biodegradable and compostable?

Biodegradable packaging decomposes in the presence of microorganisms, such as bacteria and fungi, and sunlight over a period of time that is not fixed. Compostable packaging decomposes under the same conditions usually within a period of 90 days.
