How to Use PackMojo's Holiday Packaging Patterns
1. Importing Patterns To Dieline
Begin by downloading the holiday patterns download and opening them up in Adobe Illustrator as well as your packaging dieline.
Once you've decided which pattern you would like to use, copy the rectangle on the artboard with the desired pattern and paste it onto your packaging dieline.
2. Finding Patterns in Swatch Library
Once you've pasted the pattern in your packaging dieline, open the Swatch menu by going to the top menu bar and selecting Windows > Swatches. There, you should see that the pattern has been added to your swatches.
To make any changes to the pattern such as changing the color of the elements in the pattern, click on the Edit Pattern button at the bottom of the Swatches menu.
3. Making Changes To Patterns
From the "Edit Pattern" menu you will be able to make changes to the pattern.
Begin by setting the "Dim copies to" option to 30% so that you can easily see which are the original elements. By changing the original elements, you will change the repeating elements in the pattern. You can change various properties of the pattern here such as the orientation or placement of elements, pattern spacing, and element colors. For this example, we will change all the elements to white as we intend to print white ink on kraft paper.
4. Transforming Patterns
You will notice that when you move or scale the rectangle with the pattern, the area showing the pattern will move, however the pattern itself will not move. Thus, if you want to move or scale the pattern, you will need to go to the top menu bar under Object > Transform > Scale. From the scale menu, you will see a checkbox with "Transform Pattern".
When this "Transform Pattern" box is checked, you will be able to move the pattern across the file as well as scale the pattern as a whole. When unchecked, you will be able to move the shape of the area which will show this pattern but the underlying pattern will not change. By using these two functions you can change the scale and move the pattern over your dieline.
*Note: Background color is added here so that white designs are visible and you can get an idea of what the white print may look like on kraft paper. In normal cases, they will not be needed for white print on kraft paper.
5. Removing Pattern Elements
To remove particular elements of the pattern, begin by vectorizing the pattern by going to the top menu and selecting Object > Expand.
From here, you should be able to select and delete any unwanted elements. In our case, we have deleted some ornaments so that we can fit our PackMojo logo on the front of the box.
